Announcements

Hi everyone

The new Regulatory code is now out for consultation and as we predicted the Value for Money standard has changed completely and does show a need for Associations to address 'Social Accounting' principles. Just in case you have not seen it yet it is at http://www.tenantservicesauthority.org/server/show/nav.15065

The introductory passage of the new VFM standard proposed says:

'The proposed standard has been set with the objective of ensuring providers’ boards maintain, and are transparent about, a view in the round of the optimum sustainable performance of all their assets – including for example financial, social and environmental returns - in the context of meeting their organisation’s purpose and objectives'.

There it is - organisations will need to know their social and environmental returns of all their assets. And if that not enough reason to look at this, all bodies tendering out or bidding for work in the public sector will have to either take into account (if offering) or project (if bidding) the social value of the contract when Chris Smith MP's private member bill gets royal assent.

We are busy setting up regional clusters of 3 organisations where they can learn to do this and share the costs, ideas and the processes.

Email me at hughlaird@boardagency.org.uk if  you would like a detailed proposal to see how it all works.

Best wishes,

Hugh

Hi Lyn,

I've uploaded a draft contract for a paid chair onto TenantBook. Its in the GO! group to the bottom of the home page of that group. It says ALMO but will do just as well for a Housing Association too.

Best wishes,

Hugh

Hi!

Well again I am afraid I am not allowed to share the discussions from the TSA Advisors Group. Apart from echoing my piece earlier this morning that there must be some form of regulation, thats all I can say about the future of the TSA.

I can say however that for now it is business as usual and you should by now be moving at a pace to publish your Annual Report to tenants in October. The TRA will be issuing some guidance but don't wait for that - start now by getting tenants involved in helping you decide what should be in it. The reports will not be assessed as such and you will not get feedback unless you are in breach of the standards; but there are also expectations that reports will demonstrate a co-regulatory approach and talk about how tenants have been involved.

On my way down to London for an TSA Advisors Group meeting today. Hopefully there will be some news on the future of the TSA I will be allowed to share with you later!

There has to be some form of regulation or the funders will walk away or put their rates up to cover the risk.

The West Midlands GO! Round Table met today in Birmingham. We had a great time and did some 'crystal ball gazing' about the future of Governance with a new Government and a new Housing Minister, using the later's CIH speech. Overall we decided that opportunities abound, but that it would be tough on weak boards. It confirmed also the importance of getting tenants at the heart of business.
